Some land owners in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city have sued the minister of the Federal Capital Territory Muhammad Bello, the chief of army staff Tukur Buratai and the Nigerian army over alleged violent take over of their lands.
In their suit, CU/2566/16, the land owners asked the FCT High Court to give an order to stop the minister from further trespassing on the plots of lands located at Maitama Extension in Abuja.
Ogenyi Global Resource, a firm who sued on its behalf and that of the other land owners said the minister has no right to trespass on their lands.
The land owners were to be represented by a senior advocate of Nigeria Amobi Nzelu.
Also joined as parties in the suit are the Nigerian army council, the attorney general of the federation and the minister of justice.
The land owners alternatively asked the court to allocate to them another plots of land in a choice area in Abuja or award a compensation of N50m as damages for the action of the FCT minister.

In its statement of claim, Ogenyi Global Resource accused the FCT minister of unilaterally revoking the plots allocated to them without statutory notice.
The plaintiff said the plots of land were duly allocated to him and others without encumbrances.
Speaking on the matter, Nzelu told the court that the revocation of the land did not comply with the provision of the Land. Use Act.
He said the land owners have said they will be willing to accept monetary compensation on the land which they said were forcefully obtained by the FCT minister and the Nigerian army. This they said is to show goodwill in the matter.
The claim by the owners is that a plot of land in Maitama Extension is currently valued at N200 million to N300 million.
However, the court is yet to fix a date for substantive hearing on the matter.
