EFFC witch-hunting GEJ’s family: Ijaw youths reveal how Patience got the frozen $20m

– Ijaw youths said the EFCC is deliberately witch-hunting the family of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan

– The president of the group, Eradiri , said it was wrong to ask Patience Jonathan how she got the frozen $20m in her account

– According to the group, first ladies amass their wealth from ‘thank you’ and gratification’

The Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide (IYC) has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of witch-hunting former President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Patience.

Speaking on Thursday, September 22, at a news conference in Yenagoa, Bayelsa, the group’s president, Udengs Eradiri, criticized the manner the anti-graft agency was defaming the ex-president and his family.

The former first lady has been under the radar of the anti-graft agency over alleged financial-corruption.

Eradiri said the call on Patience to explain how she made explain the source of the frozen $20m in her account, is a witch-hunt.

The IYC said: “First Ladies in Nigeria do not do any work. You know what it is; a woman naturally attracts a lot of gifts from men, let alone the First Lady who has the power to recommend people for something.

“They receive a lot of ‘Thank you’ and gratification because in most cases they recommend people. Those they recommended usually come back and say thank you ma. Even when they do not recommend, people can go and say thank you with a million dollars.

“The scenario did not start with Dame Patience Jonathan. We know how influential the former First Lady before her was and other first ladies –  how powerful, how rich, how wealthy they were as a result of gratification because they were Presidents’ wives. That is how they amass their wealth.

“If you say Patience Jonathan should go and show how she made her money, then, you must first start with all the other former First Ladies before her, otherwise it is a witch-hunt.”

The Ijaw youths asked the EFCC to stop the persecution of the former first family.

The chairman of the anti-graft agency, Ibrahim Magu, has said anyone found guilty of money laundering will not be spared, irrespective of social status. He promised that Patience would be investigated for the $15,591,700 she claimed belonged to her.

The commission has frozen the personal account of Patience because she could not explain how she got the money in it.
