Lagos communities seek help over Ogun River flood

The residents of Maidan Orile and Agiliti communities in the Mile 12 area of Ikosi-Isheri local council development area, Lagos state have cried out over the flooding of the Ogun river that has hit them hard.

The people are groaning under the weight of the incessant downpour in the state that has caused the Ogun river to overflow its banks leading to the disruption of their lives and loss of properties worth millions of naira.

Guardian reports that many residents have been rendered homeless and some others have abandoned the area for fear of their lives.

The only bridge linking Mile 12 and Maidan Orile, which was constructed and maintained by the community of six Community Development Associations (CDAs), is now under threat of collapse due to the impact of heavy floodwater on the bridge.

The people have now appealed to the state and local governments to come to their rescue by constructing a bridge to link the community with Oniyanrin/Maidan road in Mile 12 area and also build a drainage to properly channel floodwater in the area.

A community leader and chairman of Victory Estate, Abdul-Azeez said the community has lost all hope as they have been appealing to the local and state governments since 1999 without any succour.

In a related development, information has revealed 8 most flooded areas in Lagos. As the heavy downpour continues unabated in Lagos, residents have continued to lament cases of flooding in their areas which has ultimately affected vehicular movement in the state.
